Michael,
If the output file already exists gdalwarp attempts to overlay the warp
result into the existing file. This is intended to allow it to be used
for mosaicing. But if the existing output file is inappropriate for some
reason results may be peculiar or generate an error. Could you look into
this a bit more and report any cases that seem like inappropriate errors?
