The only thing, available at the GDAL FTP site is its API :-)

I'm recommend you reading API tutorial
(http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/gdal_tutorial.html), data model
explanation (http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/gdal_datamodel.html), API
reference (http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/hierarchy.html) and,
finally, gdal.h file (http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/gdal_h.html)
which is the main include file you should use in your applications.

Latest GDAL release is 1.1.9:

 ftp://ftp.remotesensing.org/pub/gdal/gdal-1.1.9.tar.gz
