Alessandro,

The intention is that it allows a numpy array to be accessed as a GDAL
dataset.  This is primarily used in OpenEV, where you can create a numpy
array and then directly visualize it without saving it to disk or copying
the data.  Likewise, most numpy use related to GDAL is in OpenEV or
derived commercial products at Atlantis.
