I tried downloading the HDF4.2r0 for linux and ran into what I presume
are similar problem.  It seems the library uses a function called
"szip_compress_memory" that is not included with the libraries and is
not part of libz or anything else I can find.   I presume it comes from:

   http://www.compressconsult.com/szip/

However, this has gotten quite a bit more complicated than I want to deal
with.  I would suggest that you either:

   Get the HDF4.1r5 package for MacOS and try that.

or

   Submit a bug in the GDAL bugzilla and I will have Andrey look into it when
   he gets a chance.

or

   both.
