I do know that

HDF4_SDS:ASTER_L1B:

isn't working right in FWTools 0.9.1

revert back to
OpenEV_FW_linux_1.7.2.tar.gz

and see if your issues are taken care of.

FWTools-0.9.1 does not honor the geographic info in the ASTER L1B file
OpenEV_FW 1.7.2 does honor it.
Also if you have previously compiled GDAL or any of the other support  
libraries you should call files from the $OPENEV_HOME/bin_safe or
$FWTools_HOME/bin_safe  dir.
