Jeff,

OK, the only outstanding issue is why you needed to explicitly provide
the -fPIC when libtool is supposed to pick it up automatically where needed.
I really have no idea how to dig into that, so I think we can just leave
it unless you are really curious (or unless Alessandro has some ideas).
