[Gdal-dev] GTOPO30 vs STRM30

Hi,
I just faced a problem running gdalinfo on a SRTM30 file. The documentation at
http://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/SRTM30/SRTM30_Documentation
says that
"It is formatted and organized in a fashion that mimics the GTOPO30 convention
so software and GIS systems that work with GTOPO30 should also work with SRTM30"
However, gdalinfo says that
'.../e100n40.dem' not recognised as a supported file format.

Has anyone tryied to load srtm30 tiles with gdal?
