I have to check this again. There has certainly been some reason to
add this include but I can't remember it any more. At the moment I
don't have the right system available so I hope it is OK for you to
wait with my answer.

THe HDFEOSVersion.h has been necessary to build gdal with gcc 3.4.
I looked at the email list archives and it seems indeed that this
has been fixed just after the gdal 1.2.1 release. So please drop
this change.
