as I know it's opposite - r.out.gdal depends on building GDAL --with-grass
like in my case when I didn't do it and I get:

r.out.gdal
(...)
ERROR: GDAL installation does not support GRASS.
    Recompile GDAL libraries to use r.out.gdal

and can somebody say if both r.in.gdal and r.out.gdal work fine in Grass 5.3
