When I use gdal_translate to create an ECW or JP2 image, the conversion/compression seems to create temporary files: a directory with the name of the image and the extension .tmp under the root (/) partition and some files in it. My problem is that the '/' partition is too small to take all the temporary files, and the conversion crashes.

Armin,

You can set the TMP environment variable to the path to a different
temporary directory.
