[Gdal-dev] ecw compression on linux

Hi all,

we would like to use gdal on linux to
- first gdal_translate geotiff images povided by a WMS server with gdal 
mapserver driver
- then produce directly with the WMS server an ecw output.

But we encounter difficulties, the ecw output is unreadable by soft like 
Erviewer or Ermapper. We tryed with our own compiled version and with 
the FWtools0.98 for linux precompiled version. Our system is debian/Gnu 
linux.
Can someone confirm that geotiff compression work with gdal on Linux  
with FWtools version or not ?
