Thanks for the pointer.  That is exactly the
information I was looking for.

Looking at the Label Tool description, there is a
field called Anchor Position, which describes the
label's position relative to the point value.  That
section has a link to what I presume is an image
showing the values and what they mean, but the link is
broken.
