[Gdal-dev] Java library for reading ESRI shapefiles?

I know you can do this with GeoTools but like all java you get a bunch
of stuff you don't need.

Does anyone know of a freely available Java library for reading ESRI 
shapefiles?  The gdal ogr and shapelib code has been great in the past, 
but now I have a need to read ESRI shapefiles directly from a Java
applet.
