[Gdal-dev] TIFF "Old JPEG" Compressed Files

Folks,

I am wondering if there is anyone out there interested in
having GDAL (and libtiff in general) be able to support
"old jpeg" compressed TIFF files. The original jpeg-in-tiff
scheme was underspecified and as a result different folks
implemented it differently meaning there are a variety of
such files which generally don't work well with libtiff.

I have an opportunity to contract someone with substantial
expertise to work on this issue if I can scare up some funding for
the work. If any of the GDAL user base are sufficiently interested
to help pay, please let me know.

I think we would need around $4000 Euro or so for the work,
but I would be willing to kick in part of it myself if needed.

I would add that "old jpeg" is the format produced by some
Microsoft technology when you choose to save in
compressed TIFF. So the issue comes up more with
various consumer TIFF files rather than actual "geospatial
data" distributed by vendors.

There is a corresponding "new jpeg" compression scheme for
TIFF that is well supported by libtiff. This work would be mainly
to maximize compatibility with existing files.

Best regards,
