[Gdal-dev] Vectorizing rasters

Hi there

I am just looking for tools (or algorithms that I might implement) in
order to vectorize rasters (e.g. convert to polygons -SHP?- the discrete
features included in an, let's say, ASCII raster map).

Up to now the only ways to do so require the use of commercial packages.
