[Gdal-dev] NOAA 14 geocoding?

Are the NOAA 14 images raw images? (still in sensor space?).

The AVHRR sensor has a very wide foot print (scan angles of +/- 55 degrees). This sensor requires a full satellite/sensor/earth/DEM model to accurately correct the images to map space. The AVHRR pixels bloom from 1.1 km to over 6 km (at end of scan) and there is a lot of parallax at end of scan, so a simple warp will not work well. While at EROS Data Center I wrote the model used to process AVHRR images.

I'd recommend acquiring an already geocoded image.

Hi,

I have ordered a coulpe of AVHRR images from CLASS archives
(http://www.class.noaa.gov) for Northern Italy:

ftp://ftp.class.noaa.gov/A2585871/
(each image 3-4MB).

To geocode them, I used gdalwarp but the images didn't
cover Northern Italy after geocoding (they appear East of
the Caspian Sea):

# apply GCPs with thin plate spline transformer
gdalwarp -tps -of HFA -t_srs "EPSG:4326" -co COMPRESS=YES \
  NSS.LHRR.NJ.D99174.S1236.E1248.B2308484.GC.L1261491 \
  NSS.LHRR.NJ.D99174.S1236.E1248.B2308484.GC.L1261491.img

The resulting images are also almost North-South oriented which
is unlikely.

I used the "generate map" feature of CLASS to verify the
position before ordering.

Is it possible that the NOAA 14 format differs?

Markus
