Ah!, of course, I was way to focused on my need at the moment, which is 
strictly visual maps.

I'm not much a purist, if someone tries to make an RGB image out of a 
population density raster, I don't' much care if it works or if they get 
garbage. We just need to make sure there's some error checking so it 
doesn't crash.
