William,
Definitely not open source, but the SDK libs are now
redistributeable. Michael Gerlek channeled the lawyers for Frank and
I to share our concerns about our ability to redistribute things.
See the REDISTRIBUTE.txt document for a synopsis of what is required
(you can't distribute the 3rd_party stuff, need to credit LizardTech,
and you need to carry their EULA around for that portion of the
software). These restrictions don't seem as onerous as they once
were, and I thank the LizardTech folks for working the issues out.
Additionally, the SDK can now be redistributed in my "buildkit" for
Windows, which makes me and the few folks (MS4W) using it to make
MapServer/GDAL builds very happy.
I was probably the one complaining the loudest about gcc 4 on OSX,
and helped test it out on both the PowerPC and intelimac before
release (against a CVS GDAL of about 2 weeks ago). I made a
suggestion of having a full Framework build of the SDK in the future,
and I was told they'd look into it.
Hopefully someday the MrSID DSDK will be open source and we'll be
able to recompile it wherever we need it (all those arcane
architectures like IA64, linux on sparc, etc aren't covered
currently). Nonetheless, I see v6 of the MrSID SDK as a step forward.
