[Gdal-dev] gdal_merge.py set output image Channel Depth

I tried the GDAl utility 'gdal-merge.py' that stitches geotiff images
preserving the pseudo color table that is what I want: a mosaic of satellite
images.  The problem is that the image produced with '-pct' option is 1 bit
grey-scale while the input images are 8 bit.
Could anyone let me know how I can keep the inputs' Channel Depth for the
output image?
