[Gdal-dev] Automatically creating raster tiles from overlapping rasters?

Anyone have a suggestion on how to automatically create raster tiles from 40+ gbs of raster images that have non-standard overlapping?

I have raster data (you can see the tile index shp file at http://orbyn.mine.nu/intersections/rasters.png ) and i want to create a non-overlapping standard-size set of raster tiles, any suggestions.  Its too much data for gdal_merge to handle at once to merge into one file and then separate tiles out of from the single file.
