GDAL configures and compiles without any problems under MSYS + MinGW - 
but you need to use the latest binutils (see my notes and links at 
http://geoinformatics.tkk.fi/twiki/bin/view/Main/InstallingWithMinGW#GDAL).

However, I haven't so far been able to compile (Perl) bindings with 
MinGW against binary GDAL compiled with VC7.1.
