John,

I suspect the image data will just be badly corrupted.  If you are building
GDAL from source, you can go into gdal/frmts/nitf and build the nitfdump
utility.  The output of it on your file might be helpful in diagnosing
the situation.

Unix:
   make nitfdump

Windows:
   nmake /f makefile.vc nitfdump.exe
