[Gdal-dev] merge rasters combining overlapping pixels

Good morning everybody,

I am gdal newbie.
I would like to combine some geo-referenced rasters (format TIFF with world
file) into one big image (TIFF with tfw again).
It is very important to be able to choose the criteria to combine two
overlapping pixels coming from two different images,
for instance I would like to use min, max or mean.
Is this possible with gdal?
Could gdal_merge.py help me?
Eventually I would like to do it  from C# using the .Net binding. Is
tihs possible?
