I have added a repot to bug#1239 <http://bugzilla.remotesensing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1239> that Markus' trick doesn't work with GDAL 1.4.0. I had to revert to 1.3.2 to do this. In fact, I implemented this in python, and could not use VRTs to do the double reprojection. Still looking into it, though!
