[Gdal-dev] xyz format

Hi,
I have a number of xyz files that need to be converted into standard formats. I have found a message[1] by Uli Müller with a nice AWK script that I have modified to suit my evil needs :) I can easily follow the same logic to write a python script, but I before I go down that route (I'll probably need an standalong application, so using awk is cumbersome), I was wondering whether there are any other ways of solving this problem. Data are x,y,z (z values at the edges of pixels), but could also be x,y,z_center (z values at the center of the pixel).
