[Gdal-dev] modis sinusoidal tiles: bug in gdal?

Hi folks,
I'm starting to work with modis 500m data, which comes in hdf tiles in a
sinusoidal projection. It is their projection/crs which makes me wonder
whether I have actually paid enough attention in GIS class years ago...
I hope someone more knowledgeable regarding sinusoidal projections
and/or gdal's modis hdf support can help me with this.
Introduction:
this data comes in tiles of 2400x2400 pixels, which seem to be just cut
from a sinusoidal world map grid (see
http://nsidc.org/data/modis/landgrid.html for an image of the grid). The
grid is 36 tiles wide (lon) by 18 tiles high (lat).
I have always presumed that the idea of a projection/crs (well, in
raster imagery, that is) is to have a linear grid spacing horizontally
and vertically (though hor and vert need not be the same) for the whole
range where the crs is valid. That means, pixel size for the entire area
is constant. For SIN, I'd think that would be the whole world, so pixel
sizes for any tile should be equal with any other tile. That way, and
only that way, they would match as in the world wide grid as shown on
the picture mentioned above.
The puzzle:
Then I tried to merge some modis tiles by using VRT, using vrt_merge.py.
I was very puzzeled when I got an error message telling me it wouldn't
merge my tiles because they did not have the same scale. After some
investigation, it indeed appeared they didn't! Pixel size (as calculated
by gdal) is different per tile. At around (0,0) degrees latlong, pixels
are square and of size 463.312716527916677 meters. The further one goes
from the equator or 0 deg longitude, the more the pixel size in that
direction differs from this 463.312716527916677 and pixels are not
square anymore.
I am lost here. Is gdal doing something wrong, are modis' sin tiles not
really sin grid tiles, or have I always underestimated projection/crs
limits and their usefulness for raster grids?
For now, I assume gdal is wrong :-) I'd like to test, but don't know
how. I can make some tiles publicly available on an ftp site if
necessary, and I'll post the gdalinfo for a couple of them (actually a
couple of the subdatasets of the tile hdf files) in this mail, first
without metadata (there is quite some), then with metadata, because I
assume gdal is calculating ul/lr from the hdf metadata. Could it be that
gdal is not taking into account the custom sphere modis uses?
