Rick,
An SRTM driver was implemented in "trunk" and will be in the 1.5.0 release.
I haven't tried it yet, but it should be built into the FWTools builds
(or just build from any trunk snapshot). Some info at:

It looks like it was implemented by Michael Mazzella and Even Rouault so
kudos and bug reports to them. :-)
