[Gdal-dev] Method to get an image by url?

Sorry to insist on this but is libcurl support the only condition to 
access images by url?

I'm able to access using FWTools but with my build 1.4.3 I get these errors.
And yes, I checked with the dependency walker that libcurl and zlib1 
etc... are all  "non red"
