Nick,

You can download an .osm file from the OSM Slippy Map (main map page) and
upload this to our online 'geoconverter'.

We're using a two step approach to do this:

1. convert .osm to gml by using an XSLT (based on
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Converting_OSM_to_GML)
2. convert gml to Shape or whatever target format ogr2ogr supports.
