Yes, it's a known bug of GDAL 1.5.0. See ticket 
http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/2145.

I've submitted a patch that checks for the NULL pointer and it seems to fix 
the problem. I'm not sure this is the correct fix however, but hopefully, an 
appropriate fix should go to GDAL 1.5.1.
