Hi Nikos,

QGIS has it's own WMS client implementation.
I think it is not a problem of GDAL, it seems as if the NASA server is sometimes down or is slow due to many requests.

Does QGIS use GDAL's WMS capabilities? If yes, then I think I observed
the same problem while trying to access NASA's JPL.
