[gdal-dev] GDAL Reading tiles ?

There's a number of discussions and utitlites to convert a geotiff type data
set to a tile(s). Is there anyway for GDAL to read a whole one of these
tiles at a time. I am looking for a way to speed up data access. So if it
could read a tile at time it be good, or would it make sense to create a
memory data set with one of these tiles and have GDAL read from the memory
data set. Would that be faster then the two conventional methods for reading
data from various files.
