Hello. You might try the following:
ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" grid.shp grid.vrt -nlt multipoint
The important part is that the source dataset is the vrt definition file,
not the csv data file. See http://www.gdal.org/ogr/drv_csv.html.
Hopefully it's this easy.
