Did try this approach, got an error message running
ogr2ogr.exe :  
Unable to open datasource `D:\....dxf' with the following drivers.
...
  -> DWG
  -> DXF

DXF was r12 acad drawing (lowest version).
Have to try again with a newest GDAL 1.5.1
