Hello Marius,

 On F9 there is no BigTIFF support only clasic GeoTIFF,
hence your strace result. My feeling is that you have
there a BigTIFF file.

  If you really want, i can ship you a custom 
libgeotiff+libtiff+gdal in form of 3 rpm package which 
support BigTIFF for fedora 9, but  off-list.
