Wolfgang,

There are at least 2 ways of achieving this :

- use -nlt flag of ogr2ogr. For example if your src.shp contains 3D points : 
ogr2ogr dest.shp src.shp -nlt POINT. See http://gdal.org/ogr2ogr.html

- or, equivalently, use the SHPT creation option of the Shape driver : ogr2ogr 
dest.shp src.shp -lco SHPT=POINT. See http://gdal.org/ogr/drv_shapefile.html
