Have you tried decompressing the kmz and then converting the doc.kml?

Subject: [gdal-dev] convert kmz to shapefiles

Hi,

I tried converting kmz (compressed kml) to shapefile but it is not
recognized by ogr2ogr. Any workaround the list can suggest?
