[gdal-dev] Building under gcc-4.3/libtool-2.2.4 (ubuntu intrepid)

Hey folks,
I'm struggling to build either the 1.5 branch or trunk on Ubuntu Intrepid
with gcc 4.3.2 and libtool 2.2.4. The symptoms are the same as described in
http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/2138 , except updating ltmain.sh doesn't
seem to help. And i get the same building the Debian v1.5.4 source package
under intrepid as well (how i got started down this track).

I've run libtoolize/aclocal/autoconf/autogen/etc to redo the setup stuff,
but i still get the same error. I'm not an autotools expert though, so
advice would be appreciated. Building with gcc/g++ 4.1 errors out in the
same way.
