Gdal 1.6.3 release candidate announcement a few days ago informs:

 EPSG:3785 does not support spherical mercator hack
<http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/3136/>

Perhaps this is your problem.  Have you tried what happens with epsg:900913?
