[gdal-dev] Is proj.4 lib necessary for Reprojection and Transformation?

After Reading API doc, I find it clear that GEOS lib is necessary for spatial analysis.
And what about Proj? Does Gdal need supports from Proj lib for Reprojection and Transformation?
