Gillian,

I have used "spike" as an area for deprecated code.  Sort of a junkyard.

We have been using the sandbox area as an area for developer specific
experimental branches and in some cases vendor specific branches.  So,
for instance, the JPIP driver development required substantial core
restructuring as well as the work on the JPIP driver itself and it was
helpful to do this work in a sandbox before migrating it into trunk after
the corresponding RFC was passed.  Also, I keep a vendor specific branch
for the modified code tree used in ESRI builds within my sandbox for
easy management without getting in the way of mainline development.
