Hi

you can try to run gdalinfo on it, or you can try to open it in a text 
editor or in Quantum GIS or guess by file extension?! Without more 
information it is hard to help ... even the term DEM file is not very 
precise, do you mean a specific file type with that extension or "just" 
a terrain model like SRTM or GeoTIFF?
