[gdal-dev] Building HDF5 driver against the binary distribution

Hi there,

I built the GDAL HDF plugin against the binary distribution of the HDF5-1-8-11 library downloaded from http://www.hdfgroup.org/HDF5/release/obtain5.html both on Windows 64 and Linux 64 but it doesn't work. It can list the SUBDATASETS but it cannot recognize each one individually.

If I compare the GDAL distribution from Tamas Szekeres (gisinternals.com/sdk/) with my built I can see that his works perfectly fine for the same file samples and same gdalinfo command. I also noticed that his installation uses "hdf5dll.dll" not the "hdf5.dll" that comes with the binary distribution (HDF5-1.8.11_win64_vs10_shared.zip).

Again, if I build GDAL HDF plugin (gdal_hdf5.dll) against the binary distribution from HDF Group gdalinfo can list the SUBDATASET but it *cannot* access each subdataset individually. I am sure that it is not a command line mistake because I can run the exact same command with Tamas's GDAL environment. Is it just because Tamas used the HDF5 1.8.2 and the driver is not compatible with newer versions like this 1.8.11?

Does anybody know what would be the procedure to build the HDF5 driver using the HDF_Group's binary packages? The instructions on http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/HDF assumes that you are willing to build the HDF(s) library yourself but users should be able download/install and use the HDF_Group's binary package and we should be able to make the GDAL HDF5 plugin compatible with that.

Thanks in advance for any clue.

Best regards,

Ivan
