Thanks for that hint,
Ya the binaries from web seems to work. In my compilation there is no gdal_HDF5Image.dll. Is it compiled with the plugin HDF5 or where I can enable it? I searched the whole source tree in gdal but did not find any text passage with gdal_HDF5Image.dll
PS: Sorry for my double post, my prior mail was written after this mail, I wrote this email in the morning and forgot to click the send button....

Can you also try with the builds available at http://www.gisinternals.com/sdk/ ? If you still reproduce, a link to this dataset (or any reproducing the same
behaviour) could be helpful.
