Ah, good point. I actually forgot to increase GDAL_VERSION_MINOR in 
gcore/gdal_version.h. And when you will run configure VERSION will be set to 
"1.12.0" since configure uses the value of GDAL_VERSION_MAJOR, _MINOR, _MICRO 
and not GDAL_RELEASE_NAME. Anyway the numbering system of trunk is pretty much 
undefined between 2 official releases.
