Revisiting recent libgeotiff activity, it seems that the GDAL ticket wasn't 
created (or I couldn't find it) nor the fix applied. Was close to be 
forgotten...
I've applied your patch in http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/5791 and also did 
a complementary fix in libgeotiff.
