--> seems that's an issue with how you compiled libhdf4. From the above, it 
seems that there's no shared library produced since GDAL tries to link agains 
the libmfhdf.a. So try to recompile libhdf4 with shared object support, or 
perhaps try building it with CFLAGS=-fPIC so that the static library makes 
GDAL happy.
