I managed to backport the GDAL 2.0 changes to Fiona 1.6.3 after all.
So instead of transitioning to 1.11.4, 2.0.2 was used instead.
Earlier today GDAL 2.0.2 and most of its reverse dependencies migrated
to Debian testing leading in the end of the transition. The remaining
reverse dependencies should migrate later this week, except SAGA which
is blocked by the libvigraimpex transition.
Unfortunately this transition was too late to have GDAL 2.x included in
the upcoming Ubuntu LTS release, that will still ship with GDAL 1.11.3.
Kind Regards,
Bas
