[gdal-dev] add gdal package to C

Hello,
I read the documentation and see there are C/C++ API for gdal,
How do I add gdal package to my compiler? (when I run "#include <gdal.h>"
it gives me an error)
I usually use python, but my professor ask me to use C/C++,
I know only a little bit of C/C++, please help
