Thanks very much for that tip, it does sound promising. A thread safety
issue may also explain another symptom I saw once, which was an unexpected
ERROR 1 while parsing the VRT file, however, that has only happened once so
I am not sure if it is the same issue.

Anyway, I will build 2.4.4 and see whether my current workaround (retrying
at most once after calling VSICurlClearCache) is rendered unnecessary.
